Juneteenth marks when, two years after slaves were freed by the Emancipation Proclamation, enforcement was brought to Texas. On June 19th, slaves in Galveston, Texas were made aware of their freedom and now, able to set out and blaze their own paths, Freedmen ventured north to Houston and, ultimately, established an independent municipality known as the first city incorporated by African Americans in the State of Texas- Independence Heights!
We celebrate this history every day, but especially on Juneteenth! Please join Beauty's Community Garden as we celebrate the resilient past and promising future of our culture and community. Come enjoy food, games, and stay tuned for a listing of our special guests!
