Our Freedom Wasn’t Free: A Juneteenth Concert of Tribute – The Tribulation, and The Triumph.

The event is scheduled for June 23, 2024, at 4:00 PM at the historic Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, located at 500 Clay Street, Houston. The concert will showcase the HEOG chorus and soloists, under the direction of Dr. Oby and featuring Dr. Vicki A. Seldon as the pianist. The concert is structured in three parts: "Prelude to Freedom," "The Dream of Freedom," and "The Fight for Freedom," featuring Negro Spirituals, Civil War Folk Songs, and more. A special feature will be the performance of "Abraham Lincoln Walks at Midnight" by African American composer Florence Price, with a piano/vocal score specially prepared for this event. Dr. Oby expressed, "It will be a joy to revive this rare piece."

Dr. Jason Oby, Artistic Director of HEOG, remarked, "This year's HEOG Juneteenth concert is set to be extraordinary, reflecting on the profound sacrifices of our ancestors for our freedom."

The concert is complimentary, with validated parking available in the adjacent garage.

Established in 1984, HEOG is a performing arts organization of classically trained vocalists from Houston's African American community, dedicated to broadening the reach of opera, traditional Negro Spirituals, and classical music.

Juneteenth Screening of ‘If They Took Us Back’

  • Google Calendar ICS

Fourth Industrial Pictures and local Writer/Director Holly Charles-Pearson, M.A. announces the Houston screening of provocative alternate history short film If They Took Us Back on Saturday, June 22, 2024 at Emancipation Park Conservancy - Cultural Center (3018 Emancipation Ave, Houston).

If They Took Us Back is inspired by a hypothetical exodus of formerly enslaved people back to Africa following the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863. More than a century later, a descendant of the ‘Black Returns’ decides to break the 160-year exile and return to the U.S. in exchange for overdue reparations from a remorseful, sympathetic and Black-obsessed America.

Majic 102.1 radio personality Madd Hatta will emcee the immersive, Juneteenth-inspired event which includes not just the screening of If They Took Us Back, but the mini-documentaryThe Making of If They Took Us Back, live musical performances from featured soundtrack artist Daniel Fears, live vendors and art exhibits, panel discussions and Q&As with the film cast and writer/director. The event is hosted by the National Black MBA Association Houston Chapter.

Audiences may choose between two screening times:

Sat, June 22 - 3pm

Sat, June 22 - 7pm

Let Freedom Ring

Let Freedom Ring

Juneteenth marks when, two years after slaves were freed by the Emancipation Proclamation, enforcement was brought to Texas. On June 19th, slaves in Galveston, Texas were made aware of their freedom and now, able to set out and blaze their own paths, Freedmen ventured north to Houston and, ultimately, established an independent municipality known as the first city incorporated by African Americans in the State of Texas- Independence Heights!

We celebrate this history every day, but especially on Juneteenth! Please join Beauty's Community Garden as we celebrate the resilient past and promising future of our culture and community.

Come enjoy food, games, and stay tuned for a listing of our special guests!
